Dear readers,

We at the Animal Police team, especially me, Nadine, would like to sincerely apologise to you, our loyal readers. We have not forgotten you, and we did not deliberately fail to send out the June newsletter by email. We did not want to withhold the animal stories and rescue operations from you — we simply have too much to do at the moment. Every day we care for our almost 300 animals while organising the construction of Finca Noah 2.0, and in the afternoon we build what was planned in the morning. Calls for help from tourists reach us several times a day. Since animal welfare is a hobby for us and not a profession, we all still go to our regular jobs. Our days are therefore very long. Finding the time to write the animal stories for you was simply not possible for me in June. I hope you are not too disappointed and will keep rooting for us.

So many of you gave Farah and me positive feedback about the emotional last newsletter. With the animal stories and rescue operations I touched many of your hearts — tears even flowed. You often cross your fingers for us, cheer and suffer along with us. You support the animals, and some of you even come by in person to give the animals attention. Thank you for that. Over the past weeks I have told you about many emergencies. Now I would like to give you a little update on how the animals have fared after lots of care and love.

Little billy goat Willi, who was found injured and all alone in the Mallorcan mountains, needed weeks of treatment for the injury on his leg. The injury was so bad that the vet was already talking about amputation. We sought a second opinion. With a lot of patience, regular treatment of the wound, wound cleaning and a bandage change every two days, the vet gave us hope that everything would be fine again. We gladly took on the task and the responsibility. It really took a long time until we could say: the wound is closed, the risk of infection is over and the bandage can finally come off. Every time I changed the bandage, I hoped so much that the healing would progress faster. After weeks of treatment, Willi now walks on all four legs, jumps, runs, climbs and gets more mischievous every day. He is a little billy goat who is currently testing with humans and animals alike just how far he can go. The joy he shows us when he walks and climbs over tables and chairs with his funny knock-kneed legs is rather exhausting for us — but who could be angry with him? We believe the work was worth it. We are happy that Willi is in the best of health again.

The 5 rescued dogs, who were abused as breeding machines their whole lives and served as the hunter's toys, but never felt a caressing hand and never had proper food in a bowl, arrived at Finca Noah 2.0 completely distraught and terrified. That they are now allowed to sleep on a warm, soft blanket, in a little house that gives them shelter, can eat and drink from a clean bowl, no longer have to live in their own faeces and can now simply be dogs — it took time for them to understand that. Every day they trust a little more. In the first weeks they would immediately flee whenever anyone entered their enclosure. Today a small part of the girls' group is happy when they see: breakfast is coming, and maybe a treat too. I am proud to say that two of the galgos now take their treat from my hand. For me that is a sign of trust, and I know it is a huge step for the galgos — hopefully many more will follow. I believe that when the day comes when I can touch one of the 5 dogs, when one comes up to me and shows me: I am no longer afraid — I will shed a tear of joy. Just the thought of it gives me goosebumps. It may sound absurd to be happy about such small things, but for these poor souls it is the greatest thing.

I often think of the place where the 5 dogs were locked up — really one has to say locked away — their whole lives. Together with the animal welfare organisation Veto we were able to free 5 dogs from that hell. 21 more are still waiting, and we will rescue them too. Two large animal welfare organisations, we at Animal Police and Veto, thinking and acting hand in hand for the animals, wanting to move mountains and standing up strongly for poor souls. You too can be part of the rescue operation … Every cent / Swiss rappen goes 100 percent to the animals.

Little tomcat Findus — we had to have his diseased eye removed. A decision that was not easy for us. A viral disease in his eye and nose forced us to choose: blind, or letting him go forever. Findus is barely a year old, has already had so much bad luck in his short life, but has chosen to fight again and again. Findus got used to no longer seeing daylight very quickly. I talk to him a lot, watch him quietly and am so fascinated by how the little man masters his life. For me it is incredible to witness the transformation from a very shy and wild tomcat into a blind, cuddly cat full of joy for life. I can comb his shiny black fur and he enjoys it. I find it so beautiful how he relies on his sensitive senses. His hearing has certainly become keener. He plays catch with the broom. He plays football with his little ball, and through the mesh of his enclosure he fishes for bird feathers with his paw. Truly fascinating and very emotionally touching. You could almost say that losing his eyesight has helped him see the world through different eyes. I am so in love with the little man and at the same time wish for a safe and loving home for him. His own family that gives him the attention, the time and the cuddles he needs and clearly has to catch up on from his past. He more than deserves it!

You see, we really do our best to rescue every animal that needs help, care and a home. Alongside the daily farm work and the construction of the new finca, we have our hands full. We do animal welfare with heart and full conviction, to offer a better life to the little souls who had no chance of survival without help. Now in summer, when many people are out and about on the streets of Mallorca again, many animals in need are being discovered. Every day several emergency calls of all kinds reach us. We really help wherever we can. If we cannot take in an animal in need for lack of space, we keep calling around until there is a solution in the animal's best interest. We are looking for the forever home for our rescued animals — the family, the best friend. Once we have found THE family for the rescued souls, we again have room for the many emergencies.

Findus is well on his way to coming to terms with his fate and his illness. His brother Felix, on the other hand, recently fought for his life. Felix is an outdoor cat — he roams, plays and sleeps all over the property. He had not been seen for two days when Farah suddenly discovered him by chance in the feed room in the horse stable — limping badly. Felix is unfortunately also one of those cats who would rather not have much to do with humans. Because of his injury, catching him was no problem. The diagnosis after the examination was shocking. The X-ray showed a triple fracture of the hip and leg. Felix had to be transferred to a trauma specialist. His diagnosis was even worse; I was speechless — I had never seen or heard anything like it. That Felix survived such an injury and could still move around is a miracle to me.

The second X-ray showed the full extent of the injury: a triple fracture of the left leg, and a damaged nerve and muscle in the right leg. On top of that came a life-threatening injury — Felix had to undergo emergency surgery immediately. His organs — liver, spleen and intestines — had shifted into the space of his lungs and heart. On the X-ray only a white mass could be seen. The vet showed me a video of the operation, which lasted almost an hour. In short, he pushed the organs back into place and closed the partition between the organs and the heart-lung area. If you ask me, a butcher surely works in a similar way. The vet wants to wait with the operation on the leg, since Felix is a very young cat, just 1 year old, and according to the vet the chances of healing without surgery are very good. For now, Felix is recovering from the operation and we hope he will be spared a second one. We are thinking positively now and wish for Felix to get well again very quickly and to romp around the yard of Finca Noah 2.0 free of pain.
